Carly O'Donoghue is the owner of Stepping Out Podiatry on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. In this episode, Carly shares the pain, guilt, and decision-making process in wanting to be both a successful business owner and a good mother.

Carly openly shares what it's like to go through a four to five year IVF program and try to run and podiatry business and treat patients, all the while being asked by well-meaning patients, "when are you going to have children"?

We also discuss:

  • The benefits of good communication skills
  • Learning to talk to patients
  • Just do your job; that’s all you need to do

"Manners don’t cost you anything. Saying please, thank you and sorry, with a smile doesn’t cost you anything. So whether you’re poor or rich, it doesn’t matter".

  • Why women are strong yet have so much self-doubt
  • Go through IVF and miscarriage
  • The tough decision on going back to work
  • Thinking about what others were going to say and being judged by others
  • Balancing work and family
  • MUM GUILT
  • Deciding if you need to get a locum or hire someone full-time. It would be best if you thought about your end goal.

Get Off the Dance Floor & Get On the Balcony

When you're on the dance floor, you cannot see anything but other dancers; however, you can see exactly where everyone is positioned with each other if you get on the balcony and look down. Your business is the same.

One day a week is not enough time to run your business if you have multiple employees. Day one is used for planning, and days two and three is for implementation.

Leadership

Leadership is a different skill set that must be learned, and there are no shortcuts or secrets; it just takes time.

Final Tip

Be self-aware. It’s not fair to compare yourself to others that have been qualified much longer.

Be realistic about where you are now and where you need to be in the future. Only compare yourself to the progression to where you were last year.
